Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle

Recently Seth and I attended an “Eagle Scout Reunion” for Boy Scout Troop #77 in Venice, FL. The room was full of current Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts and their families. The reunion was a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the men who had achieved the rank of Eagle – which not many people do (only about 5% of Boy Scouts reach Eagle). During the reunion, an article was highlighted, “Businesses could be managed better by following the Scouts” by J. Robert Parkinson. Parkinson noted that three words can serve as a daily reminder about where and how we focus our energies. Those words are “Your Behavior Counts”. This phrase relates to the 12 items of the Scout Law, “A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent.” When you think about it, don’t you want your manager or owner of a business you are hiring to be all 12 of the attributes of the Scout Law? Parkinson’s point it that “while we (as Scouts) were learning to tie knots and pitch tents we were also learning how to manage businesses”. When Seth stood in front of the room and told what he was doing today he noted that, “Being in Boy Scouts and achieving Eagle rank taught him to be involved in the community…” The motto that Scouts live by is “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle”, which is definitely true for Seth who still lives by the Scout Law each day. Congratulations again, Seth, and the other Eagles from Troop #77!
